Shooting
fish in a school
The
first ( and so far the only ) time I ever saw a massive
school of big fish I was so dumbstruck I almost didn't
know what to do. There were so many fish that it seemed
impossible to miss. I thought, "all I have to do
is shoot and I'll hit something". Fortunately I
didn't. I looked at the oncoming fish, chose one and
as he passed THWACK.9.7kg Geelbeck. This confusion is
called getting "shoaled". I've since spoken
to many divers who have encountered large shoals of
fish, and shot into them hitting
well.. Nothing.
The key I understand is to remain calm ( something I
hope I can do when I see a school of Couta!), pick your
fish, aim and shoot.
Sounds so simple
.
Patience has its rewards.
The
whole winter all my mates were shooting Garrick. Even
the new guys who had never shot one. My own dive partner
shot one twice while I didn't even see them! I went
with Gary and he shot a 10kg Garrick, me zilch. Warren
shot a 19.5kg, me niks. For the Garrick compo I massed
a total of 0kgs.
The
last two weeks saw some great clean water. I dived 9
times in 10 days and shot
..nothing. (although
my freezer is over packed with crays.
Friday
Afternoon the wind settled and I went for a quick point
dive. Was in the water 25 min when a Garrick swam straight
up to me. THWACK 12kgs. Check my fish! - click

The lesson, if you dive enough you will see and shoot
good fish!
One
liner tips
- Shake
bugs to get them out of holes.
- Shoot
the big one in a school.
- Descend
straight down when you dive.
- Wash
your gear in fresh water after every dive.
- "Look
after your holes". Dettol your crayfish holes.(hands).
Hot water in the basin with Dettol.
