Here
is the story and pic of the Pike I got
After being land locked in Maritzburg for the weekend I was
as keen as ever to get in the water. It was Tuesday morning
and I headed from Maritzburg straight to Umdloti only to be
greeted by a very green sea with quite a swell running. I decided
to have a look anyway.
I swam out north of the chain pool, not surprisingly, the vis
was a very murky 3m. I headed out to a shallow pinnacle that
I got some brusher on last season. I dropped down just before
the bricks and drifted toward them in the layer of churn on
the bottom. Looking up, the silhouette of a reasonable brusher
came into view...Not for long! before I get a shot off the surge
lifted me up and hurled me toward the bricks spooking the brusher.
Missed opportunity.
I swam further north and a bit deeper. As I dove, I heard the
unmistakeable sound of a shoal of good fish spooking. I continued
down and waited on the bottom hoping they would come back in
for a look. They did. In the murk I found my self looking at
a wall of eye balls and stripes... Sea Spikes! I drilled the
closest fish and thankfully spined him. Not having ever had
a hassle with these fish, there are a few cases of these fish
turning on divers. Just ask Len Jones!
The fish weighed 11.4 on a 25kg salter type scale. |
